Engwe E-Bike Review 2026: Fat Tyre Electric Bikes That Redefine Urban Commuting

✓ What We Liked

  • 750W motor handles 25% inclines with ease
  • 48V 13Ah battery delivers a genuine 60u201370km real-world range
  • 4-inch fat tyres absorb road surface imperfections exceptionally well
  • Hydraulic disc brakes u2014 not mechanical u2014 at this price point
  • Foldable frame for apartment storage and car transport
  • IP65 water resistance rating for year-round use

✗ What We Didn't

  • Fat tyres increase rolling resistance on smooth tarmac vs. narrow tyres
  • Weighs 32kg u2014 heavy to carry up stairs without lift access
  • Display is not colour and can be hard to read in bright sunlight
  • Motor sound is audible at higher assistance levels

The European e-bike market has grown substantially as fuel costs, urban congestion, and environmental awareness converge into a single practical argument for electric cycling. The Engwe Engine Pro sits in the middle of this market — above the cheap folding bikes that dominate online marketplaces, below the premium brands that require a finance agreement. After eight weeks of riding across urban streets, canal towpaths, gravel tracks, and light trail, our assessment is that it represents the best balance of performance and value in its class.

Motor and Performance

The 750W brushless hub motor (peak output; continuous rating is lower to comply with EU regulations in assisted mode) provides noticeably more pulling power than the 250W motors required for EU road-legal e-bikes. In off-road and private land contexts, the full power mode is accessible and dramatically changes the climbing capability — 25% grades that require standing effort on a 250W bike are handled seated at a comfortable pedalling cadence. In EU-legal 250W mode, performance is still excellent relative to the class.

Fat Tyres in Practice

4-inch fat tyres at reduced pressure (we ran 15–18 PSI versus the maximum 30 PSI) absorb road surface irregularities in a way that transforms the riding experience on imperfect urban surfaces. Cobblestones, tramlines, and potholed cycle paths that demand attention and bracing on narrow-tyre bikes become background texture. The trade-off is rolling resistance on smooth tarmac at higher speeds, where a narrow-tyre road bike is more efficient at equal effort.

Range Reality

In mixed-terrain riding at 50–70% assistance, we recorded 62–68km per charge — within the quoted 70km estimate. In full power mode on hilly terrain, range dropped to approximately 40km. These figures are more honest than most e-bike manufacturers publish.

Our Verdict

Engwe E-Bike Review 2026: Fat Tyre Electric Bikes That Redefine Urban Commuting

Engwe's Engine Pro is the best value fat-tyre e-bike we have tested under €1,500. The motor, battery, and component quality are all genuinely competitive with bikes at double the price, and the fat tyres make it usable year-round in European conditions.
