How We Tested
Twenty-two pairs of earbuds across four months. Each pair completed standardised listening tests (balanced, bass-heavy, and acoustic tracks), ANC measurement in three environments (office, airplane cabin at 80 dB, subway platform), call quality assessment from both the wearer and caller sides, and comfort evaluation across six testers with different ear canal sizes.
Why the XM5 Wins
Sony has led wireless earbud ANC for three generations, and the XM5 extends that lead rather than just maintaining it. In our airplane cabin test at 80 dB ambient noise, the XM5 reduced perceived noise by 28 dB — the next-best pair managed 22 dB. That’s the difference between hearing engine rumble faintly and hearing nothing at all.
Sound Quality
The 8.4mm driver delivers a balanced response that doesn’t artificially boost bass to mask compression artefacts. Treble extension is clear without sibilance. At moderate volumes, detail retrieval matches earphones at three times the price. The LDAC codec support (for Android users) provides near-lossless wireless audio that makes a meaningful difference on high-resolution tracks.
Call Performance
Six microphones with beamforming and AI noise reduction make the XM5 the best call earbud we’ve tested. In a busy café environment, callers rated voice clarity at 4.2/5 — the highest score in our test group. Background noise is suppressed without the processed, metallic quality that cheaper systems produce.
Comfort and Fit
Lighter than previous Sony models at 5.9g per earbud. With the correct ear tip size, all six of our testers found them comfortable at the 4-hour mark — typically where cheaper earbuds begin causing fatigue from pressure. The in-ear seal is secure enough for moderate exercise without ear wings.
Battery Life
8 hours continuous with ANC enabled — better than the claimed specification in our testing. The case provides an additional 16 hours. Five minutes in the case adds approximately 60 minutes of playback. Real-world daily use: charge once every 2–3 days for typical commuting and work use.
Our Verdict
The Sony WF-1000XM5 is the best all-round wireless earbud available. If noise cancellation and call quality matter to you, nothing else comes close at this price. The only reasons to look elsewhere: budget constraints (the previous XM4 is an excellent cheaper option) or a preference for Apple’s ecosystem integration (AirPods Pro 2 integrates better with iPhones).
