What Is SwitchBot?
SwitchBot is a smart home brand that differentiates itself by working with existing, non-smart appliances rather than requiring replacement. Their devices physically press buttons, pull curtain rods, monitor environmental conditions, and control locks — without any wiring changes or appliance replacement.
Devices We Tested
Over 8 weeks in a 3-bedroom home, we deployed: 2× Bot (button pushers), 1× Curtain 3 rail motor, 1× Hub 2 (IR blaster + hub), 1× Meter Plus (temperature/humidity), 1× Lock Pro (smart deadbolt), 1× Outdoor Meter, 1× Colour Bulb, and 1× Plug Mini.
Setup Experience
Each device paired to the SwitchBot app in under 3 minutes without exception. The Curtain motor required the most setup time (10 minutes including calibration) but the instructions were clear. Remote access requires the Hub — something to account for in the initial purchase.
Automation Performance
We set up 12 automations including scheduled curtain opening, temperature-triggered fan control via the IR blaster, and lock status notifications. All 12 ran reliably over 8 weeks with zero failures.
Integration
Compatible with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit (via Hub), and IFTTT. Voice commands responded correctly in over 95% of our tests. The HomeKit integration was slightly less responsive than native Alexa commands.
Verdict
SwitchBot is the most practical smart home ecosystem for renters, older homes, and anyone who wants automation without renovation. The device quality is excellent, automation reliability is genuinely impressive, and the ecosystem breadth means you can solve most home automation problems within one brand. Highly recommended.
