The decision to invest in a patio heater is fundamentally about time. How many weeks per year does your outdoor space go unused because of temperature? In most of the United States, a quality propane heater can add 6-10 weeks of usable outdoor time — one at each end of the warm season. At the cost of a patio heater, that is a reasonable trade.
We tested the Flame King portable propane heater through late autumn and early winter in New England — conditions ranging from 55°F on milder days to 28°F on the coldest nights of the testing period.
Heating Performance
The rated 12-foot heating radius is accurate under calm conditions. In temperatures above 40°F with light wind, the heater creates a genuinely comfortable zone adequate for 4-6 people seated around a patio table. Below 40°F, the effective comfortable zone shrinks to roughly 8 feet — still useful, but requiring closer proximity. Wind is the primary performance variable: even light breezes redirect the heat and reduce effective range noticeably.
Safety Systems
Flame King equips this unit with three independent safety systems: a tip-over shut-off that cuts the gas supply if the heater falls from vertical, a pilot outage safety valve that shuts gas flow if the pilot goes out for any reason, and an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) that shuts off the flame in low-oxygen environments. This last feature is why the unit carries an indoor prohibition — it is a safety device for the outdoor application, not a failsafe for misuse indoors.
