Our Testing Approach
Nine espresso machines, 12 weeks, 500+ shots pulled. Tasters included three trained baristas and six home coffee drinkers. We evaluated: extraction quality (TDS measurement and tasting), heat-up time, steam wand performance, consistency shot-to-shot, and ease of use for non-experts. We also assessed the learning curve over 4 weeks of daily use by the home-coffee testers.
Extraction Quality
The Bambino Plus operates at 9 bars of pressure (the professional standard) with a thermojet heating system that maintains temperature stability within 1°C. In our TDS (total dissolved solids) measurements, shots pulled by our trained baristas scored in the range of specialty café output. The 54mm portafilter basket size produces the extraction characteristics of semi-commercial machines rather than the over-extracted, bitter results common from smaller baskets.
The 3-Second Heat-Up
Not a marketing claim: the thermojet reaches extraction temperature in 3–5 seconds in our testing. Previous espresso machines required 25–45 seconds. In practice, this means you turn it on and pull your shot immediately rather than building your morning ritual around the machine’s warm-up time.
Steam Wand
The automatic steam wand positions the steam angle and controls temperature to produce correctly textured milk without requiring manual technique. In our testing, home-coffee testers produced latte art (basic rosettas) within their second week of practice — something that typically requires months of training on manual wands. For flat whites, lattes, and cappuccinos at home, this is the most significant practical advantage over manual machines.
Learning Curve
Week 1: espresso is acceptable but inconsistent. Week 2: identifying the correct grind size for your coffee produces consistent extraction. Week 3–4: repeatable, café-quality results. The plateau is genuinely high for home equipment.
Our Verdict
The Breville Bambino Plus is the best home espresso machine for anyone who wants to learn to make café-quality coffee at home. The 3-second heat-up removes the main barrier to daily use, and the automatic steam wand removes the main technical barrier to quality milk drinks. Pair it with a quality burr grinder, and you’ll stop visiting coffee shops for espresso.
