About Dorsal Fins
Dorsal is an Australian-founded brand now distributed globally, focused on manufacturing quality surfboard fins at prices below the FCS and Futures flagship ranges. They produce fibreglass, carbon, and composite fins across thruster, quad, and longboard configurations.
What We Tested
Six surfers across skill levels (intermediate to advanced) tested four fin sets over 8 weeks: fibreglass thrusters for everyday use, a carbon quad set for performance boards, a large pivot single fin for a longboard, and a small wave thruster template. Conditions ranged from 1–3ft beach break to 4–6ft reef sessions.
Performance
The fibreglass thrusters delivered a noticeable improvement over stock plastic fins — more drive through turns and better hold at speed. The carbon quad set drew the most enthusiasm from our testers: pivot response was crisp and energy transfer through bottom turns was direct in a way that rivalled fins costing twice as much.
Construction
Foiling and template geometry are accurate and consistent between the two pairs of each model we tested. No delamination or micro-cracking after 8 weeks including rocky entries and at least one board-to-board collision.
System Compatibility
Dorsal covers FCS, FCS II, Futures, and single box configurations. Installation in all four box types was correct and snug with no play or rattle.
Verdict
Dorsal Fins deliver performance that justifies switching from OEM or budget fins. The carbon options in particular are competitive with premium alternatives at a significant price advantage. Recommended for any surfer looking to upgrade their fin setup without paying heritage brand prices.
